Variables in the experiment are things that can change. The independent variable can stand alone, and will not change based on other variables. The dependent variable can change depending on the other variables.
Identify the two variables in the following experiment.
John decided to see if how much sunlight a plant gets will affect its growth. He believes that if he gives a plant more sun, then the plant will grow better. John decides to test his hypothesis by experimenting with two different plants. Each plant will receive the same amount of water, be planted in the same soil, and receive the same amount of space. Plant 1 will get 1 hour of sun a day and Plant 2 will get 8 hours of sun a day.
What is the Dependent Variable?
What is the Independent Variable?

The sunlight may affect the plants growth, but will the plants growth ever affect the sunlight?
